Drupal at FOSDEM 2010

Even tussendoor deze aankondiging:

Next weekend on Sunday, February 7, we’ll have a full day of Drupal talks at the 10th edition of FOSDEM, Europe’s biggest, free-est and open-est software conference.

FOSDEM, http://fosdem.org, is a free and non-commercial event organized by the community, for the community. Its goal is to provide Free and Open Source developers a place to meet. The Drupal project was granted a developer room at FOSDEM to do exactly that: to share knowledge about Drupal.

The presentations schedule for the devroom was published a week ago on http://groups.drupal.org/fosdem. It features interesting speakers such as Robert Douglass, Károly Négyesi, Roel de Meester and Kristof van Tomme and even more interesting subjects as mobile device design, AHAH, eID and Views 3. Everyone is invited to attend the presentations.

On Friday the giantesque beer event kicks off the conference. For Drupalistas there is a sprint on Saturday in Zaventem (http://groups.drupal.org/fosdem).

The schedule for Sunday’s devroom:

09:15 - Daniel Wehner - Views 3
10:00 - Matthias Vandermaesen - AHAH crash course
10:45 - Simon Elliot - Designing for mobile devices 11:30 - Dieter de Waele - The eID module
12:15 - Károly Négyesi - What’s new in Drupal 7 13:30 - Wim Leers - Front end performance
14:15 - Roel de Meester - How to setup the perfect development environment 15:00 - Robert Douglass - Apache Solr and state-of-the-art search techniques
15:45 - Florian Loretan - Upgrading
16:30 - Kristof van Tomme - Drupal and the semantic web

Website optimalisatie

1. Flush the buffer early [server]
2. Use GET for AJAX requests [server]
3. Post-load components [content]
4. Preload components [content]
5. Reduce the number of DOM elements [content]
6. Split components across domains [content]
7. Minimize the number of iframes [content]
8. No 404s [content]
9. Reduce cookie size [cookie]
10. Use cookie-free domains for components [cookie]
11. Minimize DOM access [javascript]
12. Develop smart event handlers [javascript]
13. Choose over @import [css]
14. Avoid filters [css]
15. Optimize images [images]
16. Optimize CSS sprites [images]
17. Don’t scale images in HTML [images]
18. Make favicon.ico small and cacheable [images]
19. Keep components under 25K [mobile]
20. Pack components into a multipart document [mobile]

Path checking in Drupal 6

The path ‘example’ is either invalid or you do not have access to it.

Who am I? - Super Duper Search & Online Marketing Bloke

Which sectors am I interested in? - Probably a Search Agency, Search Engine, or something exciting …..

My Description -

Well, what can I say about me? I am a search fiend and well known within the search industry, both within the UK and internationally. I am looking for a new challenge (and will explain why if I agree to talk with you) and am available at short notice to take your agency / search engine / online business to the next level and beyond.

If you are reading this then my ploy worked and you are intrigued by a candidate advertising themselves rather than the more traditional route of an employer / agency advertising for recruits. My premise is simple, if I can’t promote myself why would you think I can promote a web based businesses ?

I am looking for two main things. A bloody good challenge to get my teeth into and an amazing financial package, shares wouldn’t be turned down either for the right business and if you think you can’t afford me then they may be the thing that “turns me onto you”

You may be a search agency that needs a bloke to lead, develop and manage your teams from someone that lives, sleeps and breaths the organic and PPC algorithms. You may be a search company yourself, looking to take on the big boys of G, Y, M and *cough* A (you might even be G, Y, M or A and want to fight off the competition) or you may be a business operating online that wants to do it all in-house. Whatever you and your business is, if you fall into one of the above categories it is more likely I can help you than not in taking your goals and making them reality in the search space.

But….

if you are an average business, an OK kind of agency or plain old boring and unchallenging then I am not the guy for you. You can get “good enough” for a hell of a lot less money than me and to be frank I’d get bored and wouldn’t really want to work with you, so therefore won’t take the time to chat with you on the phone, let alone come and visit you.

If we go forward, I will be interviewing you as much as you will be interviewing me!

If you’re a recruitment agency I don’t really want to hear from you about being on your books, although if you have a specific role, for a specific client that you represent on a “sole agency” basis then feel free to get in touch. The worst I will say is “Thanks but this *Yawn* isn’t for me”

Ahh some achievements I have made over the years. The boring stuff to me, but potential employers etc seem to like this stuff so I’ll include some of it.

Ongoing top three results in the mega competitive industries of Porn, Pills, Casino (The ol’ PPC acronym for the big verticals) along with B2C financial services and many others.

Adapting sign up processes to increase a gaming company’s conversion from visitor to depositing player rate by 1200% (Yup, I did say twelve hundred percent).

Constantly beating the search engines no matter what changes occur and even advising a couple of them on some internal *issues* they had. Yada Yada Yada

Bottom line is I really can walk the walk and manage a business at the same time.
